A 2026 Census envelope has allegedly been returned to Statistics Canada with “Return to Sender” written across the front and a handwritten message aimed at Mark Carney.
The problem?
The census is not a suggestion box.
Statistics Canada says that by law, every household must complete a 2026 Census of Population questionnaire, and the information is collected under the authority of the Statistics Act and kept confidential. (Census Canada)
You can dislike the government.
You can dislike the Prime Minister.
You can dislike the envelope.
You can even dislike the fact that Ottawa wants to know how many bedrooms your house has.
But writing “Return to Sender” on a census form does not magically turn federal law into a customer-service unsubscribe link.
This is the part where someone eventually ends up in front of a judge saying:
“Your Honour, I didn’t know refusing mandatory government paperwork still counted as refusing mandatory government paperwork.”
Canada: where the rebellion sometimes comes with prepaid postage.
